In order to seamlessly edit Office documents, OneDrive needs to be installed and configured correctly for FYI on each individual computer. This configuration must be made when you first start using FYI, to ensure you can fully utilise FYI’s document automation features.
Note: The installation configuration is commonly done by an IT person/administrator for each computer within your practice, so this may only be needed on a computer you are using at home.
OneDrive is Microsoft's service for hosting files in the "cloud". It is available for free to all owners of a Microsoft 365 account.
With OneDrive, you can sync files between your computer and the cloud, so you can access your files from anywhere. You can work with your synchronised files directly in File Explorer and access your files even when you’re offline. Whenever you are online, any changes that you or others make will synchronise automatically.
FYI leverages OneDrive to give users rich desktop editing functionality despite being a cloud application. Therefore, it is critical to get OneDrive configured correctly in order to get the most from FYI.
Note: Due to a change that Microsoft made to OneDrive, Users with OneDrive Version 2020 (Build 20.201.1005.0006) need to have the Office Setting "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open" in your OneDrive Settings unchecked.
- Open the OneDrive app on your desktop computer.
- Click Help & Settings.
- Select Settings.
- Go to the Office tab.
- Ensure that the option "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open" is unchecked.
- Click OK to save the setting.
If you do not have not OneDrive Installed
If you do not have Windows 10 or Office 2016, install the Windows version of OneDrive. Use this link to go to the Microsoft OneDrive Setup application - https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=844652.
If you already have OneDrive Installed
Microsoft is transitioning from the old "OneDrive For Business" to a new version "OneDrive". Occasionally Windows desktop computers have "OneDrive For Business" installed, it will need to be removed. If you are getting an error when opening documents for Edit in Desktop
If you are getting an error "Sorry we couldn't find 'https://...." when opening documents for Edit in Desktop, refer to the FAQ "Sorry we couldn't find 'https://...." when opening documents for Edit in Desktop and for OneDrive Syncing.
You may need to check if OneDrive is often or permanently syncing and check it is up-to-date. Refer to How to check if the OneDrive is permanently or often syncing.
